What exactly is Mica? We are the only co-operative voluntary trading group dedicated exclusively to supporting the independent DIY and Hardware sector in the UK. Fully member-owned and directed, our structure is similar to Nisa for grocery stores - what they are to groceries, Mica is to hardware. Our mission is simple: to provide the collective power and resources that allow first-class independent retailers to successfully compete with larger corporate stores.

Our History of Trust and Scale

Mica was established in the UK in 1995/96 to bring the concept of joint branding and cost-effective marketing to the British market.

Our history is built on trust and longevity:

• Supplier Authority: We quickly established relationships with major brand names, including Akzo Nobel (Dulux), Draper Tools, and Ronseal, many of whom remain key suppliers to this day. This is a testament to our enduring trading relationships.
• Retailer Longevity: Several founding member stores remain part of the group, with some now in their second generation of family ownership working with Mica.

Since becoming a fully registered retailer co-operative group in 2010, Mica DIY has been solely owned by its members, run by a CEO who acts based on the principle of one member, one vote.
