Article : Halls Mica Carnival Windows
Date: Friday 2nd October, 2020
In August the organisers of the annual carnival in Chapel-en-le-Frith they decided they couldn’t go ahead with this years already delayed parade through the town involving local groups from the Scouts to the W.I.; a real community event; due to the ongoing covid risk.
They therefore made an online plea through social media to invite everyone on the route to consider joining in the celebration in a safe way by decorating their homes and businesses for the 12th September revised event date, as this wouldn’t require social contact outside of usual household and work bubbles.
A theme was selected of ‘back to the 70s’, as had the event gone ahead it would have been its 50th consecutive year. At this point the owners of Halls Mica Hardware, a founder Mica member and Bira member’s ears pricked up, they take their window displays seriously and have previously won prizes for promotional displays at Mica awards events.
“We change our window displays at least monthly for the new Mica consumer advertising, it keeps customers looking in the window when they drive or walk past and coming in for more than just when they need us’ said owner Joyce Hall.
“I’m lucky to have a team who have become very skilled at dressing the windows and enjoy doing it, and have got much more creative than just putting products against the glass. I think it’s important to make the shop look exciting and welcoming when you’re selling things people might consider everyday.”
Halls saw the opportunity of window display carnival as a challenge not to be missed.
“We consider our store to be at the heart of the community, and after everything that’s happened this year it was a chance for a bit of fun and enjoyment both for the staff and our customers.
“The grandson of a lady who used to work for us kindly loaned us a few of his collection of ‘Chopper’ bikes, and all our members of staff contributed to the props – from pogo sticks LPs, lava lamps to Derby County winning the FA cup.
It was a real team effort led by Carolyn. The response has been amazing.”
Following our conversation the shop has since found out their display was judged by the carnival organisers to have won first prize of all those on the parade route.
Mica Director Michael Ball commented,
“Halls Mica are a store like so many great independents who really embrace their community, and benefit from that in terms of customer loyalty. They successfully utilise their shop window as a marketing tool on the high street and on social media, and it was refreshed again within two weeks to keep people curious.
It’s great to see them recognised for their efforts locally.”
