Article : Ryan’s Celebrate 20 Years!

Date: Monday 17th September, 2012

As the Ryan’s team celebrated I spent a little time with them finding out how they’ve made their business a success, and what has changed instore since 1992!
Earlier this summer, Terry, Barbara and Michelle Ryan reached their 20th birthday as owners their store – Ryan’s Mica Local. They themed the celebration as a ‘thank you’ to their loyal customers, who in turn have rewarded the Ryans’ over the last two decades with repeat business and a great rapour.
Terry decided to get into the business originally when he was made redundant from his rep’s job selling car parts and accessories. Having visited numerous shops in his line of work, he felt sure that he could do a better job, backed up by his experience & expertise in DIY&Motoring.
Prior to looking for a premises, he had been unaware of the store he now owns existence! He knew he would need to advertise his store to consumers, and this made joining Mica (over 10 years ago) the right decision for the business.
Indeed the Mica model suits his business extremely well - like Mica he is also a co-operative, with no bosses in the store – every member of staff is equal!
Terry’s wife Barbara joined the team within the first year of trading and more recently their daughter Michelle left an office job in 2006 to work for the family business. Since then she’s never looked back “working in a DIY store is full of variety and you never know what is going to happen next!”.
Terry has made many changes to the store since taking it on; new racking, new product ranges, and a greatly expanded motoring department making his store (with the combination of product knowledge and breadth of range) the place to go for car spares & accessories with Mica supplier FPS providing excellent support to Ryans in this department.
The changes haven’t only been in the stock though, Terry comments “while there have been many, the one that is most noticeable is that customers are more demanding today and they want it now; everybody seems to be in such a rush.” The Ryan’s team answer to this is careful stock planning – right product, right time, and of course accompanied by good pricing and service.
As for the future…when Terry and Barbara retire it has been decided that their daughter Michelle will take over the business, so they know that the shop will continue in very good hands.
On behalf of everyone involved in Mica many congratulations to the Ryan’s team on their big 20.
