Mica Appoints Longstanding Independent Retailer Member to Replace Departing Chair of 15 Years

Mica’s Co-operative held its Annual AGM 14th September at the De Vere Cotswold Waterpark Hotel outside Cirencester as part of its annual Mica Exchange weekend of business and pleasure, including celebrated Exchange networking event.

The meeting saw the usual presentation of accounts & approval of auditors by Beverley Long, Mica Company Secretary followed by a company update from Mica’s Business Unit Director Michael Ball, concluding with a supplier presentation.

Each AGM also includes director elections, which see Mica members coming to the end of their term on the Co-operative board of directors opt to retire or stand again. All directors on this occasion were re-standing and were re-approved by the meeting for further terms. However after five terms as chairman, David Morris of Morris Mica stood down as chair, which was noted in the room as very much the end of era.

He gave a short speech on some of his memories of Mica and his advice for the future, before being thanked for his service with a special award and a case of his favourite wine (by request).

Michael Ball confirmed to the meeting that Joyce Hall of Halls Mica Hardware in High Peak had agreed to stand, and was unopposed, nominated by fellow Directors Deputy Chair Paul Walker, and Caryl Mutimer.

A vote was taken, and Joyce Hall was elected unanimously. On appointment, Joyce said,

“I’m stepping into big shoes, but I hope to devote my time and energy as Chair to working with the Mica team to keep Mica growing, strengthening the ‘Mica family’ we’re all very proud to be part of.

“We are all here for each other, both through the Mica office and directly. It has been a tough few years on the High Street, but as a co-operative we can promote the importance of independent businesses in each town, and the benefits of collaboration on marketing, supply & ideas exchange.”

Said Michael Ball on behalf of Mica,

“I’m delighted that we were able to have a smooth transition in the role of chair of our co-operative, an important post always held by one of our independent members.

After many years of service David felt the time was right to move on, and we are so grateful for his stewardship through difficult as well as prosperous times. In his replacement, Joyce is an experienced Mica member who I am confident can lead us in the next stage of our co-operative journey.”

Joyce Hall has run Halls Mica Hardware with husband Harry for over 30 years, and now alongside daughter & son in law Katherine & Stephen. Joyce will chair her first board meeting in November, as the first woman to hold the office.

She takes the reigns in an exciting year as 2025 will see the co-operative move into its 30th year of business.
